Ack, it's been ages since an update. Because I work exclusively on weekend mornings now, it's almost impossible for me to do weekend posts. If you are all still interested in reading posts, you are very, very welcome to make your own. In fact, I encourage it. I'm sorry for being a horrible mod. D: Anyway, on to the more interesting news:

Today my boyfriend alerted me to a new, modernized version of the Sherlock Holmes television series, written by Stephen Moffat, which some of you may know as the writer of many a mind and heart-wrenching episode of Doctor Who. I haven't read any reviews of the first episode yet, but it has premiered and you can download it through torrenting. It looks intriguing, to say the least, but I do have my reservations about something like this. I tend to stick pretty true to the source material. Has anyone seen it yet? What're your thoughts, and how does it compare to other modern Holmes-y shows like House?

Good afternoon everyone! Sorry for the lateness; I forgot to post last night and I just got home from work. Here's some cute fanart I found on Pixiv to make you happy:

Instead of doing another reading post I wanted to discuss pastiches and non-canon stories. The one I've heard most about is My Dearest Holmes by Rohase Piercy. Has anyone here read it? If so, what do you think of the characterization and such?

I personally have never read any non-canon Holmes stories, but I understand there are quite a few out there. I suppose these could be comparable to published fanfiction (like many Star Trek novels) but fic authors usually don't take great care to imitate the original author's tone.

So, what do you think about pastiches? Weak imitations, or interesting takes on the established SH universe? Any non-canon stories you can recommend?

Warner Bros has announced a December 16th 2011 release date for the Guy Ritchie-directed sequel Sherlock Holmes 2, starring Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law.

The film will be going head to head with the Brad Bird-directed Mission: Impossible IV, one week after Martin Scorsese’s 3D movie The Invention of Hugo Cabret , and one week before Steven Spielberg’s 3D performance capture adaptation of The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn and Cameron Crowe’s adaptation of We Bought A Zoo.

Also, Producer Joel Silver confirmed to Sci-Fi Wire that Rachel McAdams will return for the sequel, stating that “she’ll be present”. But I wouldn’t expect her to have a large role as the actress is tentatively scheduled to begin filming on Terrence Malick’s untitled next film in the fall.

Silver also confirms that the next film will pay off and revolve around Sherlock’s archnemesis Moriarty. Brad Pitt had previously rumored to be in line for the role.

I'm thrilled, but also skeptical about how they're going to use Irene's character again. I liked her in the first one but obviously the dynamic between Holmes and Watson has always been the main focus in the stories. A third person just sort of unbalances it. MOAR BROMANCE PLX

Two orders of business today! First: I've been thinking of doing a contest in the near future. It could be the first of a series of contests, and I thought of a few categories like macros, graphics, fics, fanvids, or anything else that might showcase your love for our dear Holmes. Would ya'll be interested in participating? I'm still trying to think of prizes and stuff, which I'm thinking could be little charms (I love making things out of polymer clay) or something virtual like a icons or a banner. So yeah: contest ideas? Categories? Fabulous prizes??

Second order of business: The resuming of the reading posts! This week's story is...

The Dancing Men

Abe Slaney, gangsta extraordinaire.

Subtext, in case you missed any: http://www.nekosmuse.com/sherlockholmes/subtext/dancingmen.htm

Drawing a blank? Consider these:
- What was your favorite/least favorite part? Why?
- Interactions between characters you found interesting.
- Were you able to guess the solution before Holmes revealed it?
- Similarities between this story and others or the movie, or a different book/tv series/film.

So garamsythe asked me to post this week's Sunday post, so here goes...I figured we haven't had a reading post in a while and frankly I've read so many of the stories lately they've sort of blended together in my head, so how's about just a

I wanna know who's reading the stories, which one are you on? Favorite quotes? Favorite slashy bits? Anything you want to discuss? (I don't know about you all, but I don't know anyone IRL that's read or is reading them right now, and I'm pretty sure they're all getting sick of me go "ZOMG WATSON SAID THIS" or "HOLMES GRABBED HIS WRIST" every five minutes...)

And heck, even if you're not reading, contribute something, anything, whatever you all want.
